My New Rack/Display Cabinet System...

-JayDog- Dec 02, 2004 01:21 AM

I set out to build myself a hybrid rack/display cabinet. I'm not a breeder nor do I have large amounts of Leos. So I wasn't in need of multiple sweater box racks. I also wanted, the few Leos that I have, to have as much running/exploring room as possible but not take up half of my apartment. That is why I used 2 twenty gallon long tanks. I wanted the tanks to look good while displayed on some sort of furniture or shelfing system. But, were easy to maintain and control the heating/lighting. One thing I did not want were ligting fixtures that sat ontop of the tank screen. I wanted to have decent bright lighting that lite up the tank, but was not needed for the heating. So I used under cabinet lighting from Home Depot. As for heating, I used FlexWatt's 11" heat tape becuase it was inexpensive, flat and somewhat easy to work with.

So I built this system with pull out shelving so I can access the tanks. Heating and lighting controled by dimmer switches. Thermostates that keep records, temp ranges and more. And, Storage for my supplies so they weren't out all over the place.

So this is what I built...

Very nice handy work...... Looks awesome...... Are you using a dimmer switch or a thermostat or a combo of the two????

Currently, each tank's heat tape is connected to just a dimmer switch and a normal lamp timer with the thermometers on the control panel to get the readings. If I find it hard to regulate the temps then I'll have to install a reostate or a regulating device. I keep forgeting what they're called.

Thanks

The total time including designing it, many Home Depot and Petco runs, building it & calibrating it... probably 40 hours.
