How long before force feeding!

mwrinkle Dec 02, 2004 07:54 AM

How long should one wait before force feeding a neonate. Every possible trick has been tried to get it to eat. It has had one meal in over a month.

One-month? This is not nearly enough time to warrant force feeding. On top of that, the choice to force feed should not be based on the time since the last meal, it should be based on weight. I recommend using a digital scale to keep accurate weights on hognoses and to be able to track weight loss. Assuming that your husbandry is correct, you are not handling it too often, and it has been checked for parasites, there is little reason to be concerned about an anorexic hognose. Myself and a few other forum regulars believe that hognoses will not start themselves to death, if you are doing everything right, it will eat when it feels like it. One month is not long enough, as four months seems to be about regular period of anorexia. One forum member has reported that his has not eaten for over six months.
