Temperature scare

cable2001 Dec 02, 2004 09:42 AM

I got a bit of a scare Tuesday night. I was out of town for a few days, so I shut off the heat lamps, but left the UV lights on their timer. I turned my house thermostat down to 60, and figured that would cool Amon and Amaunette down enough to keep them in their den for a few days and not be hungry.

I came home Tuesday night to a really cold house. My furnace had gotten stuck (it usually only happens once a year) and wasn't coming on. My house was in the low fifties. The lizards were nowhere to be seen, and the thermometer in their cage was off the scale.

I immediately turned on the night lamp and got the furnace going. But, it crapped out again overnight and I woke to a cold house. A little warmer, though... at least the thermometer was showing around 60 degrees. I turned on the heat lamps, got the furnace going, and went to work.

I again came home to a cold house, but at least the heat lamps had the lizard's temps up to 85 degrees. Amon was basking, but Amaunette was nowhere to be seen. I got the furnace going again (and this time, I think it was fixed for good), but had to leave again. Before I left, I got Amon to eat a small roach.

I got home last night and the house was warm and the tank was almost 90 degrees. Amon was still basking, and Amaunette was poking her head out of the den, so I know she is ok.

The furnace was working fine this morning, so hopefully everything will get back to normal now. The fish in my anole tank had a rough time, too, since while I was gone the pump clogged up and was barely running when I got home. Since the pump is responsible for not only aerating the water, but also for moving the warm water into the pool where they usually live, they had cold water.

Who knew being gone for two days would cause so many problems???

Palludarium. I don't have any pics handy, but it is a Rivertank Ecosystem. I keep meaning to get pics up, because it is really nice!
