goini gone crazy

genlelow Dec 02, 2004 01:06 PM

hey all, its been like a year since i posted...
...my kingsnake is going crazy, well not really crazy, but his activity has spiked to an all time high. He is nonstop running laps. I take him out on a regular basis, and its almost too hard to hold him, he won't calm down. Its like he has a secret stash of caffein pills or somehting. I havn't fed him in maybe 2-3 weeks because i was trying to slow him down for the winter, but to my surprise, he is the energizer bunny(snake). I also have a columbian and he is going crazy too, constantly running laps in his enclosure as well. I don't think I am doing anything wrong, i guess they are just super happy right now. it must be that they are as excited as i that it might snow soon too...HAHA

for snakes to brumate (hibernate). The activity increases as all snakes become very urgent to find a good place to hibernate. So your goini will desperately and relentlessly try to escape because it is looking for a suitable "winter den" so to speak. This requires much looking around and many miles of crawling for most snakes - hence the increased activity. This will eventually cease, especially when temps are gradually lowered until the snake rests for a loooong time (only to emerge during warm spells and get a brief drink). So I don't think your snake is happy - just anxious (to brumate).

thanx for your reply...

i see what ur saying about brumating...but i do not know if i should brumate him or not, plus that might be difficult since he lives in the sames room i live in and i don't quite feel like living without heat in my room this winter, plus i don't think he is really old enough for it to be neccessary...

i do know that last year i had a younger king, and he was a yearling and simply didin;t eat over the winter and once march rolled around he started pounding pinks, but he still failed to make it through the summer, i wasn't surprised that he died.

thanx again
