crazy columbian

genlelow Dec 02, 2004 01:13 PM

ok, i've had my columbian for about a year and a half now. he is gorwing beautifully and always eats well, never had problems. just recently in the past 2 weeks he has reached an all time high in his activity. he hasn't spent much time in his hide box like he normally does, and is always stretched out, hustling and bustling like he has someplace to go. i am not quite understanding it either. last time i fed him was maybe 3 weeks ago, 2 large rats. he was a big fat couch potatoe after that for a week and ahalf until he digested it all. he shat it all out and now he is a crazy man. im not complaining, but i just thought he would be calmer now that it is wintertime. i dunno if i should not keep as much heat on him now, or whether i should stay the course. is he raoming around his cage cause he is hungry? i plan on feeding him come this weekend anyhow, but is that the true reason for i behavior? i think it might be, but maybe some more experienced peeps could give me some insite, and pleease, if i am doing anything wrong, let me know. i would hate to come back to my apt one day and find him dead as a doornail...thanx

There could be many reasons for his behavior. Here are just a few that come to mind:

1. He's hungry
2. He's too hot
3. He's looking for a girlfriend (It is that time of year)

Thanx for replying back with some answers...

1. i know he is not hot because i have had his heat light off for a few days to see what happens to his activity...it didn't slow him down any...so it is prob around 70ish without his light on.

2. he may be hungry, in fact he most likely is hungry, and i plan on feeding him on saturday(its difficult to get food midweek)

3. he is prob not looking for a nice looking woman snake right now because i think he is too young to be having those thoughts...haha, i thought they had to be like 3, he isn't even 2 yet.

ok, well i guess he will calm down soon enough.

Well, males can often breed as young as 16-18 months, so it is a possibility, but who knows. You should, however, consider switching to frozen thawed rats. You can order them online and just keep them in your freezer. Much more convinient and safer for your snake.

Good luck with him.

yea, i have definalty been thinking about that, i often will buy a few at a time and just throw them in the freezer for use at a later date...haha
