Freak Breeding question.... Female retaining Sperm ? This possible....

SMsnakes Dec 02, 2004 01:17 PM

Here is a the big question..

Ok. 2690 gram female is breed to a spider in 03 she did not take or produce any eggs that year.
Owner got upset when season was over.
He sold her to a friend that breed her in 04 to a pastel male.
She layed in her clutch was 8 laid 7 eggs.
In which 1 slug, 2 normals, 2 pastels and 3 spiders were produced.

How the heck is this possible??

Yeah snakes definatley can retain sperm, for how long I'm not sure but they can.

Co-doms should help us get an idea of how common retained sperm is. A breeder in my state bred a ghost pair in 02 and produced all ghosts. In 03 he bred the same ghost female to a pastel male not known to have any ghost ancestors and again produced all ghosts but no pastels.

Hopefully sperm retention is pretty rare but back in the days when most breedings where producing normal looking recessive hets it was harder to see than now with all the co-dominants and crosses.

Hopefully some lab will develop a commercial paternity test for snakes soon. Such tests are already available for many other domesticated animals and even some fish species. It should be much easier than developing a test for each specific het and of course will have a wider perspective customer base and will not become obsolete as the morph devalues (it will be just as useful for newer morphs).

A friend of mine mentioned this today. He was joking about collecting urates and then waiting for the "thingy" to turn blue/pink/whatever.lol
This year is my first attempt, and once introduced they locked up for 3 days, now nothing.Or are they are being shy now(hide box)?...who knows.
I dunno yet,..wish i had one of them bp paternity test kits

The friend got a hell of a deal then. Wonder if he gave his buddy any spiders or kept them all for himself.

I heard it from Aaron Van Camp. I got the idea that it was some sort of partnership deal and I don't remember the partner's name but Aaron was bummed that they ended up having to shell out the big bucks to buy a pastel het ghost after they didn't hatch one.

I know of one boa breeder who claims that once he breeds a female to a specific morph type male he will rarely partner her with another mutation carrying male for this potential issue.. And in the cases that he has partnered females with a different mutation male he will not sell the offspring as carrying the genetics (unless they are visible) from the new male, only the genetics of the female.
