Question about sand vipers....

TJP Dec 02, 2004 03:03 PM

What type of enclosures do you keep your sand vipers in?
Open lid aquarium, neodesha, vision, etc.? I'm just curious as to what people are comfortable with.
Thanks for any replies.

I keep mine in a locked 50 breeder tank. Completely escape-proof(unless I'm careless). I keep them on sand, of course, with a huge UTH pad on one side. I don't use a water bowl at all, except for once every 6 weeks or so. I'll put in a waterdish & simply let it dry up. Sand vipers rarely drink water, but I still like to offer it.
To be perfectly honest, right now I have their heat & lights off in preparation for the mating season. Still have them around 78*. This will most likely vary between species. Mine are Sahara Desert Vipers.

Hi:

I use Precisions cages for all of my smaller snakes. Near zero chance of escape and makes a nice habitat. Works great with a 40 or 60 ceramic emmitter.

Hey Phobos. That is really a nice set-up you have. I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one that tries to match their natural environment. Your viper must feel at home there.
NICE,
Cricket

Geee Thanks,

I really try to strike a balance between safety & a natural environment. I could have a hundred snakes stacked in shoe box cages in a rack but what kind of life are you providing for your animal.

Thanks again,

Al

I appreciate the input. It may all be a moot point since I didn't make the Hamburg show, thus lessening my chances of acquiring anymore snakes before the ban.
I'll post some pics if I do manage to get any.....maybe Al would like to sell me one of his bitis......hehe

We use a custom made cherry wood cage made by Crescent Moon Creations. It is designed to keep venomous. The cage measures 36" x 18" x 18" which may seem big for a single Cerastes but this snake uses every square inch of his environment. It has several inches of white play sand mixed with a little gravel and also has some weathered pieces of limbs/driftwood....really nice exhibit.
