Building your own incubator?

-JayDog- Dec 02, 2004 10:01 PM

Has anybody ever built there own incubator, or know of a website that has plans to building one? From what I gathered, it seems that any box that maintains a certian temp and humidity level, will do the trick. Is this true?

Thanks

Built this a couple of weeks ago. I have been testing it to see how well it holds the temps...so far, so good. I won't be putting any eggs in it until february or march.

What are you using for heat? It looks like Light Ropes. The shelving you're using looks like plastic cover for office vents or flourescent lighting. Is this a complete Home Depot project? Or, are there any special materials used to build it?

Thanks,
Jason

You are right on both...the blue rope light is on a thermostat (there are 3 digital thermometers used & I double check with my temp gun) and the shelves are egg crates. So far the temps have held steady, been about 3 weeks or so, it is still empty. I put this together using stuff I had laying around and stuff I got at Home Depot for about $30. I used the blue roll out insulation for the inside for better temps. So anyone could put one of these together.

Thanks for the info. If I get brave and try to breed this season, I'll build one. After you built it, is there anything that you would do differently or better?

I will be using a helix thermostat instead of the ESU I am using now. Other than that I am pretty happy with it.

Well, you can get away with using an aquarium to create an incubator. Unless you are going to be hatching a lot of eggs.

The best way to do it is to fill the bottom of a glass aquarium with water. Put a brick in the bottom - or something that will rest with the top above the water. Then place an underwater heater under the water. Seran wrap a screen lid. And you should do it tightly so that the moisture doesn't escape. Get a small tupperware container, fill it with moist vermiculite, or sphagnum moss. Put a thermometer in the tupperware container. Then just let the thing heat up. You want to set the underwater heater to around 79-83 for females. 85 for a mix, and anything over that will mostly - if not always - be males.

I seem to have tossed my picture of it. If I may another one this year, I'll post it here.
