Offered a Leopard Gecko

uropat Jul 01, 2003 08:54 PM

Hi
I was recently offered a leopard gecko and was wondering what size of aquarium I would need to house 1 or 2 for their whole life. I also want to know if I can use a undertank heater for the tank instead of a heat lamp. I would prefer to be told teh amount of gallons that i would need instead of dimensions.
Thanks in advance.

a 10 gallon is the minimum, a 20L is the better. the UTH is actually better then the lamp, as they like the belly heat and are nocturnal.

when carefully set up, 2 gecko's can live comfortably in a 10 gallon tank. in all cases a 20L is better, but a 10 gallon will work for no more then 2.

I kept 2 adults in a 10 gal before... honestly I don't think they were very comfortable. I gave them plenty of hides, but that small of a cage is way too cramped. It's really not even big enough to create a proper thermal gradient anyway. Personally I think a 20 gal. long is the minimum for 1 just because you barely can get the cage setup properly with a 10.

I guess this situation is similar to all our conversations about tokay geckos. Some believe a tokay (sometimes even a pair) will be plenty fine in a 20 gal. and others believe the absolute minimum is 65 gallons (100 gal for a pair). It's all just a matter of opinion and personal experience.
