Chinese green snake

Blacksails Dec 02, 2004 11:13 PM

Hey i have a chance to get a Chinese green snake(I think the scientific name is C. major)but I have a few questions.

1. First the price it is $60.00, is that overpriced?

2. Are they bad captives?

3. How big do they get?

4. Do they eat other snakes?( I may have to house him with my leucistic rat and i don't want him to eat him)

That's all the questions I have so please don't ignore this thread. I have till next sunday to decide if i should buy him.

Thank you

i honestly dont know about that snake, i did a search on google and it gives me about 13 pages in chinese, 1 page in english...but no information on it. Being a colubrid, i would say its somewhat related to any of the asian ratsnakes...and i would never put 2 rat snakes together, especially asians. seems to be a decent price, but i would quiz whoever you're buying it from to get all the information you can on this snake.

But I would never put 2 colubrids together...theres always the potential for getting eaten, but thats true with any snake. how old is this snake/how big?

Ok, here's what I found. Commonly used name- Cyclophiops major AKA Greater Green Snake. image link images.google.com/images?q=Cyclophiops%20major&hl=en&lr=&sa=N&tab=wi
I did a search on google under that and found some sites that discussed their awful condition upon import into the country. Like many wild caught Chinese snakes (Mandarins and Moellendorffi) they tend to die shortly after arrival. I would not house this snake anywhere near a healthy snake. Quarantine!!!
The only thing I could find about feeding was a post from Rearfang here on Kingsnake forums.kingsnake.com/view.php?id=636136,636583
I have no idea on pricing...

Thanks for all the info i really appreciate it. Anyway i don't think they are going to be housed together('cause i think he is W/C). I'm almost definetly getting him if hes there tomorrow after 4:00. I don't know his size exactly but I know it's over 2 feet(atleast it looked like it).

I'm pretty sure it W/C so what should I do? Find a vet that will check him for parasites or something?

I'm almost positive it's an import and wild caught, better to be safe than sorry. You dont want to possibly pass parasites from the new snake to your existing snake so keep them well away from each other. Don't share anything between the cages and wash your hands well after handling the new snake. Contact your vet and ask them if they can treat the snake for parasites (worms and such). You'll need to get it eating so that you can take a fresh (less than 24 hours old and kept in the fridge) fecal sample in for testing. I generally quarantine new snakes for up to 6 months, and with the Asian imports I've had (Mandarins and Asian Keelbacks), some live a couple years and some live a couple months. The green snake may be hardier than Mandarins, but I haven't heard of many people keeping them or breeding them. I wish you luck, get all the information you can from the seller and see if they have any sort of health guarantee. Post a pic if you get the snake so we can see what these guys look like!

Thank you. I didn't get it yesterday because they wouldn't sell it to me 'cause it didn't eat yet. They tried everything but nightcrawlers. I told them to try them so i'll see how things are on monday. I'll deffinetly take pictures of it that will be the first thing I do.

Well they got him eating night crawlers so i bought him. I'll have pics up with in the week!!!

lolaophidia Dec 06, 2004 05:19 PM

I'm glad he ate! Now line up your vet visit and keep the snake away from any of your other critters. Try to resist the urge to handle the snake for a few days (I usually give them a week) so it can get settled in. Once you get it eating regularly, you can begin the handling/taming process. I'll be looking for your pics.
