would like info on Sulcatas

Hello all - I have never posted in the tortoise forum before (I have 9 lizards so I'm always in that part of kingsnake.com) but anyway, I was at a local petstore the other day & saw they had a tiny African "Spur Thigh" Tortoise, selling for $100 after a 25% discount, as they are trying to "get rid of their reptiles" (how nice!?) The little guy is so cute & it does not look like it is in the right conditions, based on what I know & have heard from other, more educated reptile stores. I might be interested in adding a tortoise to my herp collection but I have to make sure I could care for it 100%. Where can I find more info or caresheets on these guys? Thanks for your help!
~Danielle

Here's one site http://www.sulcata-station.org/ but there are many more on the web. Please think this over before getting one because these guys can get VERY large. Somebody had posted an article about how they can walk through sheetrock at 25 pounds. Not trying to discourage you but just wanted to let you know what you are getting into.

They are all cute when they are small, but grow large and very
difficult to manage for most people. Not a pet for children -
my tortoise is 3 years old and over 40 pounds, my son can't
even lift it! - also not a pet for anybody that can't keep it
outside most all of the year. Tortoises are nice pets but this
specific type is going to be a problem (financially also) in
keeping for most people. The $100 or whatever the price is
will become irrelevant when they're eating that much a month.
Think about this carefully. Good luck. niki
