New to gophers . . .first one , applegate albino

nathan23 Dec 03, 2004 02:47 AM

Ive been working with reptiles for about 7 years now and a few years ago fell in love with gophers. I unfortunatly have never had the pleasure to own one untill now. I got this little guy from a local reptile show last month. What do you guys think? Also this may sound like a stupid question but what is the main difference between normal albino gophers and applegate albinos? Thanks for looking.

Great pics of that amazing albino! I've had my first bullsnake for about two months now. She's the most docile snake I've ever had and is growing great, almost 22" at 4 months old.

As far as the difference in a regular albino and the applegate ( which I prefer to call Purple Blotched ) They were selctively bred to enhance the amount of purple/white in the coloration, making a really awesome looking albino.

Of all of the different animals we have in the collection our pits are our favorite of the bunch.

There are actually several different albino san diego gophers. They all have a differnt look to them, and the applegates are the most common phase I do believe. They also seem to be the favorite among collectors. Its called applegate because Bob Applegate was the one who breed this trait and introduced it. There are others, like Bechtel and Limburg, but they arent as common as the Applegate. Each of these are formed by a different trait, so when you breed them together, you get normal animals that are heterozygous for two differnt albinos instead of albino offspring.

Nice animal!

thanks for the info. I figured bob had something to do with this trait I just wasnt sure what the difference was between this form and others. Thought maybe it had something to do with more color or something like that. Anyways thanks again.
