RI questions

Tigergenesis Dec 03, 2004 07:35 AM

I always see it suggested to raise temps in the early stages of RI, but what about humidity? How does it affect RI? Should it be lowered, raised, kept within the species normal limits?

And is it contagious? I always assumed so, but recently read a post where someone said it wasn't.

You should increase the heat in the cage to the upper end of its temperature requirement. If this doesn't help in a couple days. You will need to take the snake in to see a vet for some antibotics.
As far as the water container. I would replace with a small one that the snake cannot soak in. And as with any sick animal use common sense for quarantine.
Good luck, I hope this helps a little.

So does that mean you decrease humidity? I don't have a snake with RI at the moment (knock on wood) but have just always wondered how humidity fits in with it? Thanks!

I'm glad to hear you do not have a snake with a respiratory infection. Now this is just my opinion but if you had a desert snake with an RI, I would remove all water containers. And if you had a snake that required higher levels of humidity i would reduce the size of the water bowl. Now looking in my corn snake manual by kathy love i see she says, the sick snake should be removed and isolated in a separate room to avoid spreading the problem.
