breeding question . . .

nathan23 Dec 03, 2004 04:38 PM

Sorry about all the questions. I ussually keep lizards but have been getting more and more into colubrids. If i breed this guy to another double reverse stripe(if thats even what you would call him). Would I get all double reverse stripe offspring? Or would i get a variety of patterns. Or If I breed him to a wide striped female would I get offspring with both patterns?

peace,
nate

It depends if he/she is hybrid for somthing else. Or if the stripes are dominate or ressesive and what the mate has

somthin to look into

You must know what the parents look like. And even then you only have roughly a 50% chance of knowing what babies you're going to have. Here's a perfect example of the fun world of genetics: I bred two cal kings this year. I ended up with 5 different varieties: Albino/yellow striped; Albino yellow banded; Albino/white banded; black/white stripe; black/white banded;
Now for the kicker: None of the babies resembled their parents:
Mother: Lgt.BROWN/yellow stripe
Father: BROWN/extremely wide white banded.
This is because the parents genes were NOT dominant in either case. You can really study and understyand this a little better by breeding different colored mice for many generations (Your snakes will thank you for it, LOL)

Genetics can be confusing (but once you understand the basics and have all the information (such as parents and grandparents info) you CAN determine to some degree what you'll get. . .

You had a good mix there Zee.

Personally, I think the babies did resemble the parents....sort of. You had all the ingredients of producing exactly what you did. Of course, the black and white babies will probably turn brown like the male......and both were albino hets. As you stated, neither of the parents had a dominant genetic makeup, so you got a great mix of all genes. Cool stuff.

Thanks Brandon! I agree, I had NO idea what I would end up with, because the former owner didn't know anything about the history of those (parent) snakes. I didn't know if they were het for anyhting. . . So it was interesting to see. The only thing I know is they came from different pet stores.
