Are Horned Frogs supposed to brumate????

btorgy Dec 03, 2004 08:04 PM

I was under the impression that Horned Frogs were more tropical animals, and did not brumate. But my male wants to bury himself and has stopped eating. He does not have the film over his eyes, and I dug him up today to be sure he's okay, and he is nice and fat! I put an undertank heater on a piece of glass which I then placed under the tank to try to raise the temps a little, they are in the low to mid 70's F. I tried to use a heat lamp but he just buried himself more, so I was afraid he was too warm. All the rest of my animals are brumating, I just didn't expect my frog to.
Thanks,
Beth

Yes they can, it depends on your frog really. You should also never digup your frog they dont like that to much.

NEVER use a heat lamp it will dry out there skin and cause more problems then fixes. As long as your tank is above 70F your frog should be ok, I keep my tank at 74-76F and my frog is happy about it. Your frog could be digging for a few reasons tho.

1. To cold
2. Not enough moister
3. It could be ready to burmate
4. It could just be real lazy like mine

If it dug down more sense you added the undertank heater its probley trying to get close to the warmth but be sure to put down something in the tank to keep the frog from getting up to the glass and presseing its self on the heater it could hurt it.

If you have any over head lighting on your tank thats not fluorescent be sure to get rid of it and make sure your tank isnt in direct sunlight "IE setting infront of the window." You really dont need any lighting on your, the heater should be good enough.
