Please help my iggy...

carib74 Dec 03, 2004 08:57 PM

Apologies for my english

Please help me with my iggy Chandler, I noticed that his left hand was turning black in the exterior side and his finger looks in bad shape so I took him to the vet. My vet is great with dogs and cats, but this is just the second ig he gots as a patient, so far he could only tell me that looks like he had his hand broken before and for some reason now he doesn't walk normally, instead of using his palm he uses the exterior side of his hand walk, with the fingers to the inside and that is causing a big brushing (sp?). He doesn't know how to help him, he suggested to use a kind of glue named Epoxi (sp?) to protect the area. He said he used that before to fix turtles. The poor thing was clearly abused from the kid that had him before because he is missing three nails from his right hand, and the tail. Can anybody advice me how to help him with his hand? In this picture (2 weeks ago) you can see the position of the hand, but not all the black damaged area, I will a recent pic tomorrow. Thanks in advance

Ana

More info: he is 6,4 SVL, I am not sure about his age or his diet before, now is MK salad with a lot of hibiscus flowers and a calcium supplement. He only eats voluntary the flowers, the rest I have to force feed him for the rest.
He also got some black scales in his head, is it normal? I haven't seen him rubbing his head to the cage wire (is metalic) can be stress from the forced feeding? should I stop and let him eat only the hibiscus? I already tried to mix it, but then he will ignore all....

I think that your igg have a broken "hand", was he always like that ? if yes it might be a birth defect. i'm not sure how to help you, but one thing i know, i wouldnt put epoxy on his hand ! Epoxy is a glue that harden as it dry, it works well on turtle shell but not on soft flesh ! Maybe having him moving the less possible for the next few days might help. Put his food and water near him.

Sorry my english might not be that great...

It's back toes look alright.. I think it is just the angle of the picture. But the front leg.. to me it looks as if the poor thing has broke it's wrist at some point in time.. Can your vet do an x-ray? Maybe peek inside and see what is wrong.
Best of luck.

Thanks to all. The back leg is perfect. His hand was in bad position since I got him, but it was not so bruished and black as is now. The reason the vet suggested the epoxy is to create a protection for the area he is rubbing so bad. Is difficult to explain how it looks like without a pic, but I have to wait for my friend, because I don't have a camera. Hope I can post it maybe later. I live in a small island and there is no herp vet, my vet said is useless to make and xray because is and old fracture he wouln't know how to fix it in such a small iggy. Still hoping somebody had seen before something like that and can suggest something.

Hard to tell from here but if it is turning black quickly then it could be dry gangrene. Watch to make sure it isn't spreading up into the foot. Keep in mind that I have only seen one case of this on a bearded dragons tail and it spread very quickly.

Hopefully this is not the case but is something you might want to keep in mind. I'm sure the vet that you took him to would have diagnosed that anyways. Good luck with your IG.

I have seen this EXACT thing before. It is a broken leg and the bones of the leg have benn squished on top of each other. The igg needs to have the bones pulled away from each other and set and then put into a cast. I have a pic of my big guy with that same problem. I do not know about the black, but I would assume that if he has had this break for a long time, that he could be brusing him self from the inside. This is not the best pic, but I can't find the one that shoes the uncovered leg. I had the cast done and the leg works now, but he had a bend in the wrist after it had healed. Ziggy past away though. Not from the leg.
