bleached earless lizard

flamedcrestie Dec 04, 2004 10:46 AM

here's a pic of a bleached earless lizard that i happened to run into when i was in new mexico at the gypsum sand dunes. my girlfriend spotted the little guy running through the white sand and i went sprinting up a huge sand dune ( yes, it was quite difficult) anyways, i ended up catching it and getting it to calm down enough to snap a few pictures. i didn't know where else to pose the pics. thought you guys would think it was interesting.

is the greater earless BLEACHED as you say, or is it an albino ? Or do they just take on the color of the dunes?

Very neat looking !

they just call it bleached. it's a completely white morph of the regular. there was almost no pattern on it and it's eyes were pitch black. there's a couple of pictures i've seen where the pattern is very faint but still noticable.
there's 2 or 3 other reptiles of the gypsum dunes that have also devoloped a white morph. very difficult to see when they're runing around.
