I made a succesful tegu rescue today....

kevinBD1 Dec 04, 2004 04:35 PM

I went out to a guys house that i worked for this summer today to visit, well this past summer i had donated my tegu to him to use in his educational programs he does. He didnt use it, so from the end of the summer until now, he had it sitting in a 10 gallon tank, hay as substrate, no heat. Needless to say i ended that. I took him back and he is now in a 55 gallon tank, mulch type mixture substrate, and heat. When i gave the tegu to him he was about 10 inches long, he is now 2 feet. wow. I am truly glad a i got him back. He has a bit of a respiratory problem now, but is already looking much better. Now i have a question, Does he need UVB lighting??

There is a lot of debate on this subject; what I remember is that adults can do fine without so long as their diet is properly supplemented etc, but youngsters really need it. Seeing as yours is quite young (and possibly malnourished etc from his past owner), I would recommend getting a UV source in there until he reaches near adult growth. Others can correct me if Im wrong, but this is the course of action that I would take

If you havent already though obviously a vet visit is in order - though I get the impression that you have this taken care of from your post Good luck, and well done.
