If you take all the Minerals out of water it will naturally try and get those Minerals back. Hence when you drink distilled water it will get those minerals back, and guess where? YOU! whats worse is later you got to tap a kidney and guess where all those minerals that where robbed from you cause the water took it goes? DOWN THE DRAIN!. So to be honest with you, id just deal with the stains and cleaning. Id rather my animals had the minerals than to loose them every time they drink.

Just my opinion.

Use the r.o water for cleaning and spraying the cage, use tap for hydrating the animals in question via drinking bowl and directly spraying the animals, tap water is hell on glass and acyrlic, but r.o is just as bad on the animals health.

The easiest way to get around the problem at hand is to simply NOT MIST. I never mist until it is time to make woopie. Just put a few water bowls that have good surface area around the enclosure, and let physics do the rest. If you still can’t hit 50 % humid doing this just buy a 30 dollar warm air humidifier for the room. I hold firm to the theory that you should never over hydrate these animals because it is a thin line, and on the other side are chronic resp. infections.
All in all work is work, you may love doing it, but it is still work.
If you Wish to still mist, then....
As with water, tap water with a dechlorinator added, boiled, cooled down to 70 deg. Is the only affordable thing I have found.
In the time I have been doing this I have never heard anything bad of RO. The RO removes none of the Nutrients, minerals, or anything of that nature. The only thing it removes is Chlorine and sediment over 5 microns in size. So hell Any thing might help, but It would not remove everything and if you have several animals an industrial model cost Thousands!!!

Well I hope I have helped

I have been using RO water for everyone in my house for around 2 years now with no problems. I know of other's that have been using it for alot longer than that. I love the taste its alot better tasting than spring water.

enclosures? do your ETBs drink it exclusively? thanks

TimRash Dec 05, 2004 10:10 AM

Nope it leaves no stains at all and everyone in my house only drinks RO water. My family, dogs and snakes all drink it.

With as little a ETBs drink, and with the mineral load that must be in rat, its hard for me to believe they would become mineral deplet by drinking RO water...however, I do know a few nephrologists who run dialysis centers and I would imagine they would have a pretty good idea....I will also do a web search....Thanks, Norm
