Found the stuff I was looking for at Lowe's however............

tim5580 Dec 04, 2004 09:01 PM

Woe is me! I found the bypass door track and rollers at Lowe's. It is like $9 for a 24-48" piece and like $15 for a big one. However it is for doors that are 3/4" to 1 5/8" thick. Kind of sucks because the plexiglass is like 1/8". So, any ideas on how I can use this? I was considering taking a piece of wood and mounting the glass in it and attatching it to that. But that is still gonna leave a huge ass gap between the pieces of glass. They have rollers and the piece that holds the glass, but they don't sell the track for it. I do not know why.

However, my mom does have an old shower door from when she remodled the bathroom, that is a 2 piece bypass that is sitting in my parent's garage. I may take that and use it if I am allowed (my dad hates snakes).

However I did find vent covers that looked pretty nice. They even have a screen back on them. They only run like $1.57 or something a piece so I am going to use them instead of pegboard.

Anyway, still $28.88 a sheet for 4'x8' cabinet grade 3/4" birch plywood at my Home Depot. Might have to buy some here come payday.

The bypass door slides you bought are for closet doors, etc.
If you have'nt opened the pack, bring it back, and tell the salesperson exactly what you are looking for.
Or go to Rockler.com. They sell it there

First, I agree with Burmboy - return whatever you bought and don't try to use the shower door.

Secondly, 1/8" acrylic should not be used in sliding door track on snake cages - not secure enough.

1/4" or 1/8" glass is fine, however, unless it's for a very large/strong snake.

Current snakes:

1.1 Gonyosoma oxycephala - (Silver/Yellow)

3.4 Gonyosoma oxycephala - (Green)

2.1 Gonyosoma janseni - (Black)

The only thing I bought was from Burger King .
The acrylic I saw was really thin, I guesed it was 1/8", they had no size on it. The only reason I didnt get it from roeckler already is it is $45 and it has 4' length and I want a 5' cage. Though I might drop down a foot so I can do it out of one sheet of wood.
It is a dumeril boa, averages around 6-7 ft max legth, not a climber. So maybe a 4x2x2 would work.

So as a last resort I searched for "sliding" on Home Depot website and I got 2 things, that are:

Prime Line Products
Sliding Shower Door Guide
Model 826000
4-1/8" Sliding Shower Door Guide ''Pkg Of 2''
• Keeps sliding tub enclosure doors aligned
• Used by enclosures manufactured by International
• Snap-in tabs hold guide to track
• Fits 1/2" thick door rails
• Contains (1) guide

AND

Prime Line Products
Sliding Shower Door Guide
Model 825900
1-1/2'' Sliding Shower Door Guide ''Pkg Of 2''
• Keeps sliding tub enclosure doors aligned
• Used by several shower door manufacturers
• Fits 7/16" thick door rails
• Contains (2) guides

Would either of these work? I was thinking the first one maybe.
I tried to link but it didnt work for some reason. Go to HomeDepot.com and search for sliding and these 2 come up.

Anyway here is a picture of my boa, since I love to post pics of her, I cleaned her cage out tonight and thought it would be time for a new picture of her.

Go to home depot, the glass cutting area is where I find the sliding panel tracks you are looking for. I get 6' white tracks for about $10. They are usually kinda hidden against a post or something (they like to stick stuff in strange places). If that fails, go to doityourslf.com and look up "stanley sliding panel track" will be costly though because you have to order at least 6. If this helps...when you go to home depot the upc # is 3392309044
You could also try a glass shop.
ood luck!

Everyone is telling you the right things but the key is you can not use the 1/8 plexi. It is going to flex way too much for anything other than small lizards. Any snake of any size has the power to push it right out of its tracks. Most Lowes and Home depots (both stores in several locations around here)have plexi by the name of dura plex and I use the .220 inch thick (just shy of 1/4)this will also accomodate the standard 1/4 in tracks that they have been telling you about.

snakes owned
8ft red tail
16ft burmese
1-5ft & 1-growing ball
1-growing blood
eastern king
solomon island boa
corn

I looked all over HomeDepot and Lowes and neither of them had track small enough. I asked 2 or 3 guys at each store too. 10.99 isn't to bad, I am only gonna need 2 after all.
Your post reminded me of the sizes, it was .220 and there was .080 I think, so I think I am gonna order 2 of these tracks burmaboy linked me to. http://www.rockler.com/ecom7/product_details.cfm?&offerings_id=2275&objectgroup_id=37&catid=20&filter=sliding doors
The glass just sits in the track? It was really lightweight so I guessed it would slide pretty easy.

The tracks you're looking for are about $7 for a 7 foot section, they're made by Stanley and they're found in a Home Depot in the Millwork department [doors and windows - I worked at Despot for 7 years before getting out and into zoos]. You will have to look around for it but sometimes it's found near bifold doors or near the plexiglass cutting area. Also, I have used 1/8" plexi on some cages I made years ago but I over came the flexibility issues by devising a special fastening mechanism that held the panels together in the middle. Not the best design, but at the time I couldn't afford the 1/4" plexi so the 1/8" with some ingenuity was a compromise. You can use the 1/4" plexi in those tracks but beware that even 1/4" plexi will warp. Glass is your best bet and a showcase lock to hold the panels closed.

You know I couldn't find these tracks anywhere, 3 Home Depots and 2 Menards with no luck. I was going to order them from doitbest.com, but they wanted like 45.00 to ship me 5 sets of tracks, oversized packaging!!! Anyways I ended up just making a pass on the table saw and my plexi fit in perfectly.
Just a thought,
Robin

tim5580 Dec 06, 2004 03:08 PM

I'd give that a shot, but I don't have a table saw. I could attempt it with a circular saw, but I am not that brave.
