Pinky Mice for a skinny leo?

-JayDog- Dec 04, 2004 11:38 PM

My male leo has gotten skinny even though I feed him at least every other day. I don't think he has ever eaten back to back days. One thing I want to know is what would cause him to stop eating the regular amount that an adult should eat? What can I do to fatten him up? I heard that Pinky Mice is a good change in diet to fatten up a leo. Should I get some pinkies? I tried wax worms and he wouldn't touch them.

Thanks,

Yes it depends on the size of the leo is it an adult? Then yes if not I wouldnt really risk it. I know some who give juvies pinkies but I think its not a good idea. What is their staple diet crickets or mealworms? I think tha some leos bored with food I dont just feed them one type of food. Well I hope my babbling at 2:30 a.m. has helped you.

try the waxworms again, just pinch the butt off and squeeze some of the goo out. usually stimulates them. make sure you hold your leo too in your hand, tight. warmth of your hand will bring up his temp and might stimulate the appitite

Seriously there is soemthing wrong here. If you have to hold the =gecko in your hand to stimulate them to eat, its cage is too cold.

You should be keeping them in an area that does not have a drastically different temp than the cage. You want the hot side to be close to 85-90 on the surface of the floor of the cage. It comes from Pakistan, its warm there during the day. get a fecal sample done, sometimes captive produced animals have parasites, especially if it has been in contact with multiple animals (pin worms are easy to spread within a collection).

You shouldn't be giving the gecko more than a few crickets at a time. Never dump more than 6 crickets into a cage (for one animal) at any feeding time, unless you see it eat every insect. Vary the diet a bit. They do not consume one type of insect in the wild, they are foragers, they eat what they can. Are you using any type of supplements. I recommend using herptivite, repcal with D3, mineral indoor vits, and trical calcium powder. Any combo works as long as you use one multi-vit and one calcium.

Check the basics before trying drastically different prey.

If the leo is an adult then pinkies would be fine just make sure to only feed about one a month. Leos can be very picky some of my adults won't eat them so in the end yours may not either. Good luck!
