Temperment Of BRB compared to CRD

damian5000 Dec 04, 2004 11:59 PM

Hi all.....

I've read here that baby BRB's can be nippy....

Rather than ask what is the temperment of BRB, since i've owned several columbian red tails i'd like to know how does the temperment of BRB compare to that of CRT? (as babys? as young adults? as adults?).

I'm asking generally of course. I know that how a snake is handled is the most important aspect.

Also... Ease of breeding...How does that compare?

Also...............How long do BRB get???

Thanks to all who read and respond...

Damian,
....Captive raised adults of either species are about the same in terms of likelyhood of biting. Right after they are born BRBs are more likely to be nippy than Boa Constrictors. However, because they are smaller they are much easier to tame. I just let them bite and chew if they want and they quickly learn that I am not something they can eat and that biting me does not make me go away. The bite of a little Redtail Boa is not perticularly painful but it is just enough more so than the bite from a baby BRB that I am not as able to let them bite and chew so easily. The bite of a 6 foot long adult BRB can be annoying but is not real painful and usually bleeds a little. The bite from an adult 7 or 8 foot long Boa Constrictor is much more painful and has much more cutting and bleeding. I have had dozens of WC specimens of either species and I found that because I was not as likely to be hurt by the bite of an adult BRB I was able to tame them much quickly than I was able to tame adult WC adult Boa Constrictors.

Damian,
...I forgot to answer your other questions. I think most people find Colombian and Central American Boa Constrictors to be easier to breed than BRBs. The Surinam Redtail Boas seem to be much more difficult to breed either Rainbow Boas or Colombain or CA Boa Constrictors. Max size of BRBs is around 8.5 feet. Most adult females are 6 feet or a little larger.
