Help!! Injured Crested Shedding!!!!!

deadoktober Dec 05, 2004 12:01 PM

Okay, so last night I noticed that my injured Gecko was starting to shed. My first thought was good...but when I checked on her this morning...her scabbed injury has been re-exposed...she shed her scab.

I've put her in a sterile enviornment and misted the area hoping that the moisture will help keep it clean and help her continue her shed. I can see pink skin and I'm concerned about her developing an infection. I don't want to use a topical yet (not an injection) because I don't know what is the best i should use...Iodine or hydrogene peroxcide...

I'd ask Ellena my friend but she sleeps till hell freezes over and is NEVER awake this early...

I'm afraid that the Gecko is in pain but she is moving around without really taking it easy on her leg. Will the exposed skin harden over again? If so about how long? Will her new scab shed with her next shedding? aaaahhhhhhhhh!!!!

I wouldn't use iodine or the peroxide, as, if I recall correctly, both sting alot when applied to an open wound. I would suggest using an anti-bacterial ointment and put a dab over the injury. (you can use a q-tip to apply it)

use the normal clear kind, not the pain reducer.

thank you thank you thank you!

I didn't even think about neosporine!

with all the vets and medications and whatnot, it can be daunting trying to think of whats right to use. someone recommended it to me a while ago, and i recently was unfortunate to have a uroplatus phantasticus get its knee stuck through the screen. in his struggle, he bled a little bit but i was lucky enough to free him without too much harm, and neosporin helped keep his tiny fragile limb clean so it could heal nice and quick!

the neosporin a day?

flamedcrestie Dec 05, 2004 12:47 PM

i would just check it every few hours and see if it's starting to get dirty or dry out. like you said you have it in a pretty sanitary enclosure so getting dirty shouldn't really be an issue. it should start to heal up pretty good in a couple of days i would imagine. i've used neosporin on nose rub cases and a couple of other incidences and have never had any problems with it. good luck

Should I help her with the rest of her shed? I really don't feel like touching her right now.

flamedcrestie Dec 05, 2004 01:16 PM

and let it soak in, then maybe help her out after a couple of hours.

I just feel bad about touching her. She's gotta be in pain. I wish they made pain killers for Geckos.

as you can tell, shes probably a bit fragile right now. spray her down, give the skin a chance to moisten, and if need be you can try using a pair of tweezers to pull off little bits. hope your crested starts getting better soon, it has sounded like a rough week or two. im sure she'll pull thru!
