Suggestions on a better laying spot? (little long)

MdngtRain Dec 05, 2004 01:02 PM

My female veiled has got me worried... She was receptive back in September, but I have never seen her get her gavid colors... and I might be hallucinating, but I think I see egg bulges on her sides. I've placed a laying bucket into her cage & put plants around it for privsacy, the thing is, she avoids it 99% of the time, unless I place her feeding cup into it, then she stands at the edge to get her food & leaves. Any ideas on how I can make the spot more comfortable? I'm so afraid of her getting egg-bound... (sorry, no current access to a scale to be able to monitor her wight... she is eating like a pig tho... always does... should I only worry when she stops eating? She heads down to the floor of her cage often, and walks around there, even right after eating & leaving some food in her cup. I thought that someone said it was signs that she was getting ready to lay).
Oh, btw, her bucket is a 5 gallon with 50/50 moist sand & soil mixture. I have several pathways onto & out of it, so she can get there whenever she wants. Should I put a light over it to make it warmer? Put more vines around it? Am I just too anxious?
I am adding a pic of her set-up, tho it's old now. Her Pothos is now next to the bucket & she has at least 4 sticks/branches criss-crossing over & around it, as well as across the top half of the cage for basking. She has a dripper in the left back corner, and another smaller hibiscus at the bottom of the cage.

I use the 5gal buckets with no problems. Females can retain the sperm until she's ready for her eggs to be fertilized. If she's still eating, you have nothing to worry about. Females will go off feed a day or so before she lays.
Hope this helps,

I'm guessing infertile, tho she did have access to a male & they were "caught in the act" a few times, but I'm not sure if the male is fertile himself (she had been housed with her brother at the time, and I just recently got her her own place. I'm hoping they are infertile, b/c I had not intended to mate her to her brother, she just grew up too fast on me).

Is the laying bucket in the first picture the one with the other plant on it?? If so maybe take the other plant off of it to give her more room to dig around in there.
