people on this forum often have excellent pics...I'm planning to get my first digital camera and wondered what kind you all use and like for taking pics of your snakes? I would appreciate any advice on what to get, or what to avoid.
Thanks,
Janel

They are easy to use, and take great pics. I have an older model 2500 coolpix and plan on upgrading after the holidays. I believe that Jimmy (draybar) uses a coolpix also. (don't quote me on that though) I will let him answer that one!!!

I bought this one this past spring. Takes awhile to get used to any camera that you buy.
The best thing to do is find someone that you know that already has a camera and get them to let you play with it.
What are your goals with a digital?
"Can't keep up with the Jones'" Find a nice camera and stick with it for a couple of years before you get another.
I like my Nikon COOLPIX 5700. 5 Megapixels and 8 OPTICAL ZOOM. Optical Zoom is more important than Digital Zoom. It has a nice Macro feature BUT I can only use Macro up to FINE on quality (bummer).
There are lots out there to choose from and a lot of them are good. There are also web sites that give you ratings and feedbacks, but be cautious with that as their purpose may not be your purpose, hence different feedback.

Janel,
I can't tell you which company sells the best camera or just how much you truly need to take photos of your animals. Just about any of the brand names have excellent cameras.
The main issue for megapixels and a lot of the other features goes back to your desired use of the pictures. As far as internet use anything over about 3 megapixels works well.
For framing, publishing or similar uses I would probably recommend 5 megapixels or more.
I use a Nikon 3100.
it is a low to mid range digital camera.
3.2 megapixel
3X optical zoom
4X digital zoom
macro feature

>>>>left off the coolpix part
I beleive I have that digital camera as well, or it's a Nikon Coolpix 3200. Don't have it with me right now, but I do like it. I just need more practice with it. Lately, can't seem to get it focusing right, probably because I am too close to the item I am photographing. It doesn't help the target doesn't stop moving LOL.
>>keeping the little buggers still long enough to get a few good pics.
They make a CoolPix 3200 also.
Have no idea what the difference is between it and my 3100
except 100....of course....LOL

Hi,
I have been lurking for quite a while and have also been fascinated by all the wonderful photos.
What are the snakes in when being photographed? If they are not in any kind of enclosure how do you get them to stay still?!
Thanks,
Joanna

I usually place them in a box that only has substrate and a water dish/hide.
I let them curl up under the water dish for a few minutes to calm down, remove the hide and snap a few pictures before they get too active.
With the ones that are in Sterilite containers I will sometimes just place the whole container under a light and remove their hide.
Works the same as before.
Snap a few pictures before they get too active.

I'm not sure I want popular opinion on my side -- I've noticed those with the most opinions often have the fewest facts.
I have a coolpix and love it.Almost any digital camera will take a decent pic but you have to learn how to use light as your friend...Paul
