i am so confused!! what size tank do you keep an adult red-eared slider? i have heard that a 30 or 40 gallon is fine and i have heard that you need a 75 or bigger. please help me out!!

You keep it in the biggest enclosure you can. Minimums are exactly that minimum. They are the equivalent of being in prison. Just enough room to survive.

The rule of thumb is ten gallons of water per inch of turtle. You can get away with 5 gallons of water per inch of turtle, but less than that is certainly not ideal. A 50 gallon rubbermaid tub is a good cheap choice.

I have a one year old RES right now and I have him in a 20 long which he is soon going to outgrow. Growing up I had a RES that lived 18 years and he grew to be the size of a dinner plate and we had him in a 55 gallon tank and he lived happily for 18 years!
But the bigger the better!!!!!!!!
