sexing my turtles

Cdp75 Dec 05, 2004 05:43 PM

I've been wondering what sex they were since I got them. I read about tail size and shell length. I read they needed to be 4". Spot and Squiggles is now 3" long and there's a big difference between the two. Spot's tail is huge and fat. Plus his shell looks different of the under side.
Even though they're not 4" yet, it makes me think that Spot is a boy. Any chance I could be right? Or is it still to early to tell?

That all sorta depends on what kind of turtles Spot and Squiggles are.

They're false maps. Last night I got them out again and took a good look...they both have a concave bottom shell. So, now I'm thinking they're both boys. Atleast I hope so!!

Cool. Do male Graptemys have longer front claws like male Pseudemys and Chrysemys?

Well, I read that they did.

The way to sex map turtles easiest is by the tail. Clearly males tail is longer and thicker than the female. Also, males generally are considerably smaller than females.

I'd say male. My 3.5" Raphael is showing manlyness. I havent been flashed yet but his cloaca is way beyond his plastron and his claws are just beginning to grow out. He's gonna look SO freaking cool. He's my boy!
