Ok, kiwi has been in breeding season for about 6 weeks now and he is really pressing my nerves. I cant get him to eat good and he keeps pacing in his cage. I have partially solved the pacing with letting him out when he wants out and putting up paper in the places he usually paces at. But i cant seem to keep him eating! I have found that when i mix grated carrots into his greens and he eats better but i know that they are high in oxalates and that they are not going to work out till its over. Soooo.... i am wondering what you guys use to entice your igs to eat during these testosterone filled months?

Thanks allot, Mark and Kiwi

Have you tried figs? Xander loves loves loves them. I buy them dried, then soak them in water and nuke em in the microwaves for 1 minute, then chop them up small and put them on his greens. Then I take the water, and pour the water on top. Xander will take a bite of anything that smells like figs, including my fingers!

They're high in calcium and water, so if you can get him to eat them, you might get through breeding season okay

Well, Ike seems to have unusual tastes, in that he doesn't seem thrilled about foods other igs seem to love. He'd be perfectly happy to eat nothing but collard, I think, but he also loves green beans, melon and kiwi. He's been given, and will eat prickly pear, mushrooms and okra, among other things, but only when he runs out of other foods on his plate. I also wanted to ask, does anybody feed their igs cucumber or peppers? We've been meaning to try but haven't gotten around to it yet...

Forest is still in the breeding season thing too & he won't eat either.

I've mixed different greens, tried his old favorites, even went out & bought the figs, soaked them, diced them, poured the liquid on top of his salad.....NOTHING.

I've thrown out 80% of his plates this past week & he turns his nose up at whatever I try.

He's drinking & pottying & taking a bite here & there but GEESH!

Males!

Any other suggestions?

I could really use some help here too! Bamboo would eat about two full bowls per day. Now he eats about four bites. I've tried everything except for figs. I've been looking for them ever since I read about them in James Hatfields' book, but I can't find them anywhere. If anybody knows of a store in the Mid West Please let me know (and also what part of the grocery store). Maybe it will work, maybe it wont. But at least I can still get them in his diet!

It's the holiday time & a lot of people buy them for fruitcakes, fig pudding, etc. I found them by asking, in the produce section with their dried fruit.

They're dried so I'm thinking they could be kept in fridge for a long time.

Not that it matters to me, Forest turned his nose up at them. Loved the fresh ones off our bush but couldn't care less now.

Dang, I hate male breeding season!

Good luck!

Thanks everyone for the responses!!!, I think i will try the figs. I have used them before out of breeding season just for a high calcium snack and he seemed to like them, but his tastes do seem to change. Jeez, how long does this crap last! I want it to be summer again when me and him can lay out by (or in!) the pool in the wonderfull sunshine, and he will eat and poop his little heart out! lol.

Thanks again, mark and Kiwi
