TEGU CAGES! anyone have ideas? Im building it soon...

dmlove Dec 05, 2004 06:41 PM

Heres my dimensions - 8 ft long, 4 ft long, and 30 inches wide (to fit through avg door). I want doors in the front, along with the top being able to swing open. I am going to make it mostly out of plywood, with a few sections on the top having hardware cloth so that basking lights/flourescent lights (for light only) can fit. Inside the cage I would make a few shelves for basking, and I would have the long UVB lights inside the cage. It would all be on casters, and there would be a 1 1/2 ft substrate barrier on the bottom. 1 1/2 ft up the cage the doors would start. I was thinking about 2 doors in the front, with a top that comes open. Im wondering if this sounds alright, and if you have any suggestions, especially for the doors! Thanks

David

looks pretty good, i dont know much about tegus but i believe they have soem pretty decent claws on them right. you might want to go with something other thatn plexi, as it will look like crap real quick. a one foot substrate dam is a little much as well too, 6 inches should be good. well good luck

Thanks - Yeah i think im going to be using glass for the cage windows. The 1.5 ft substrate - good for tegus. They LOVE to burrow, and DEEP! I beleive he will like it, im going to used bed-a-beast i think, or some other mulch substrate.

I'm always concerned with such large cages because most people just worry about the width of doorways and nothing else. Heck, some people dont' even worry about that so you're ahead of the game.

I always encourage people to try to limit the length of their cages to just under the height of a typical doorway. This way the cage can always be turned upright and slid around corners, etc.

With your cage you're talking about flipping it up on it's back or front to move it through doorways. That's a footprint of 96"x30" which is very difficult to get through doorways. If you can a 30" wide door you'd need to go through it straight on, something that's hard to do with an 8' cage.

At a minimum I'd say get some cardboard and make a template that is 30"x96" and try to slide it around your home, through doorways, around corners, etc.

If it fits it would be nice to give your Tegu that much space. Otherwise you're looking at removing nearly 20" in length from the cage.
