Tegu cages - any ideas? Post your photo!

dmlove Dec 05, 2004 06:43 PM

Heres my dimensions - 8 ft long, 4 ft long, and 30 inches wide (to fit through avg door). I want doors in the front, along with the top being able to swing open. I am going to make it mostly out of plywood, with a few sections on the top having hardware cloth so that basking lights/flourescent lights (for light only) can fit. Inside the cage I would make a few shelves for basking, and I would have the long UVB lights inside the cage. It would all be on casters, and there would be a 1 1/2 ft substrate barrier on the bottom. 1 1/2 ft up the cage the doors would start. I was thinking about 2 doors in the front, with a top that comes open. Im wondering if this sounds alright, and if you have any suggestions, especially for the doors! Thanks

PS Post your photos of your cage!

David

Looks good to me. Just make sure your hardware cloth is securely attached. Loiosh has jumped at the lights on mine, figuring if light can get in, he ought to be able to get out. If it had not been secure, he would have knocked it loose, I'm sure.

Here's a picture of my setup. Mine has sliding glass on the front, and all the vents on top except the ones with lights are covered with plex.

The plans look good but 30cm wide seems a bit narrow to me. Being 8 feet long may make up for that though. Good luck with it

Don't think these actually qualify as "cages", but these are some of the enclosures where we keep our breeding adults. In the top left corner is the underground burrows we have in all the pens, and the bottom left corner shows the interior layout.

I'm in the process of building a larger enclosure for my tegu. I dont thin khe'll ever achieve his full size, but I'm still going to build a 5L'X 1.5W'X 2H'. He's a special guy with special needs, to say the least. I stole your idea of the substrate dam, good idea! What does anyone think of my dimensions? *My tegu has been badly badly dwarfed, so an 8' enclosure is not needed unfortunately* I know in general the height doesnt need to be great, but my tegu seems to really enjoy climbing... high.
