a blood at the vet

pythonis Dec 05, 2004 09:25 PM

a man brings his adult blood python to the vet for a routine exam.
he hands the snake to the vet and the vet looks the snake over then says, "well he looks good but im afraid im gonna have to put him down." the owner is shocked and replies "oh my god! is he sick?" the doctor says "No...he is heavy!"

My vet doesn't hold mine, he invites his vet techs in to see and learn how to hold larger snakes. This of course I demonstrate by restraining the snake's upper body while the tech holds the lower portion.

I wonder if he does this to see if they get crapped on? LOL!

One of my bloods made a vet visit once (to what was supposed to be THE exotic vet in the area) and the techs were too scared to handle her properly. There was one woman who had grabbed her behind the head and was afraid to let go (the poor snake was flailing). I tried to tell her that the snake would be WAY better with minimum restraint. Anyway, she puts the snake's body in the bin I brought her in, and puts the cover most of the way on and quickly lets go of the head and snaps the cover on. My bloods are pretty calm, so I don't know if she was just scared of snakes in general? I wasn't too happy with that place at all.

I was reading some sort of online veterenary manual on "proper protocol" for treating snakes, or something like that, and one of the things it said was to restrain the head at all costs, even if the owner of the snake assures you that it's tame. I think they had some other reasonably bad advise as well -- very anti-snake!
