Low light broms?

Randy27 Jul 02, 2003 01:08 AM

I'm fixing up a 10 gal/hex for some incoming pumilio's. I want to put a couple of broms in, but the light fixture only hold 8 watt bulbs (grrrr!) Does anyone know of a species of brom that can tolerate low light levels? I will have the viv near a window that receives bright morning sun, but will this be enough?

You could try Neo. compacta. It'll prolly survive but not thrive.

Try the small green Vriseas.

Yup, and it only supports (a whopping) 8 watts. It's more tall than it is wide, which doesn't help either.

I think repti-glo makes lights that small, should be fine for a small tank.

Hey Randy. It is kind of hit and miss with any brom. Most if not given enough light will not do well. Have you thought about retrofitting the light with a compact fluorescent setup? I have the ballasts, bulbs and other parts to do it and it does not cost much. if you send me a pic of the inside of the fixture, I might be able to tell you hopw to set it up. By the way, what morph of pumilio are you getting?

The "All-Glass Aquarium Company" makes a 6500k screw-in compact fluorescent bulb that fits in an incandescent fish tank hood!!!!! I have two of these on my vent tank, and my brom is bright red and pupping. They give the proper color temp, and don't really heat up too much. They are also inexpensive, as I bought mine for $17.99 each, and that is in Canadian funds of course. I highlt recommend these bulbs, and al ofd my future vivs will feature this brand of bulbs.
Good luck

A friend of mine just gave me one w/ a 75w output. It completely saturates my viv w/ light and gives off VERY little heat. I think I will use these bulbs from now on also.
