im really starting to wonder what type of jobs you all have that you can go out and buy all these deluxe tanks and heaters and such for your snakes. im a waiter making $2.13 an hour plus tips so it takes me about a week on average to save up for something over $100. what are you guys? molecular biologists or something?

Maybe it's time to look for a better job? Alot of people take on extra jobs around the holidays to buy xmas gifts, maybe take a part time job and buy some snakes. Andy

Most of my animals pay for themselves. It can be an investment just like anything else. I breed them and sell the babies to pet shops and sell them at local shows. Many of us didn't just buy all this stuff overnight either. It's taken me many years to find the animals I have now. Also, I don't go out and buy the latest/greatest electronic gadgets or lots of other stuff. I spend my money on my animals.
Currently I breed:

2.2 Colombian Rainbow Boas
1.1 Ball Pythons
2.3 Coastal Carpet Pythons
1.2 Spotted Pythons
1.1 Western Hognose
1.1 Madagascan Giant Hognose
1.1 Timor Monitors
1.1 African Spur-Thighed Tortoises (Sulcattas)
2.5 Russian Tortoises
1.2 Mali Uromastyx
1.2 Jacksons Chameleons
1.2 Veiled Chameleons
2.2 Fat-tail Geckos
1.1 Gargoyle Geckos

Actually, I am a molecular biologist. I make a lot of my own cages and breed mice to reduce costs. Basically my herps are self sustaining plus some. It's the hobby that pays for itself. I also sell extra mice to local herpers and that pays the weekly bills, so the sale of offspring is just money in the bank. Now if I didn't buy so many new snakes.....

i'm a loan officer. i do ok. i only have a 2 bedroom apt so rent is cheap, and i drive a kia so that's pretty inexpensive too.

i think it has more to do with quality than anything else. yes some of these snakes are expensive, even better reason not to buy them unless you can afford everything they need. it's not a hobby for everybody that's for sure, but he'll i've blown thousands on baseball cards so i guess any hobby can be as expensive as you make it!!!
