Small Day Geckos and Mantella Frogs

swoop56 Dec 06, 2004 11:02 AM

I know mixing is generally frowned upon in these forums but I've read a little of it working out and actually gave it some thought.

I have a 65 gallon tank 36x18x24. At most I would have 2 day geckos and 2 mantella frogs in the enclosure. Both species are territorial with thier own kind of the same sex. But would they be territorial against each other? The geckos would stay on the branches and frogs would have the floor. They are both small so there really isn't risk for being eaten. There are 2 hiding places on the floor and I plan on having one in the branches.

Would they compete for food? Or is it just a matter of putting in more crickets?

My main concern is the toxin in the frog. If the gecko ever got thirsty and drank from the frog water dish, would the gecko get sick and/or die?

i don't know much about mantellas however i would imagine even the gecko licking, or attempting to consume one of them would be bad, or fatal. it's usually not worth risking the lives of the animals to try to keep them together.
