Early riser from brumation...

lkt Dec 06, 2004 12:09 PM

Last year Kiana went down in October and didn't budge until spring. I would get her up to weigh her occasionally but she'd go right back into her hidey and shut down. She only lost about 7 grams (she was roughly 380 grams) .

This year she went down in early October and woke up a couple of days ago. Yesterday she turned around in her hide and kept her head up so I got her up for a weighing. She's dropped from 400 to 391 which doesn't really bother me too much (should it?), but she's become pretty active, so I turned on her UVB lamp in addition to her basking light. I also gave her a big drink from a syringe and I'll give her a bath later if she doesn't bed down again.

My question is should I encourage her to eat now, wait a day or two, or what? I don't want her to eat if she's going to go right back to sleep, but I don't want to starve her if she's hungry either. How do you guys handle this? She's getting 11 hours of daylight, FYI. I set the timer up to pretty much match what's going on outside, which she can plainly see from her enclosure.

My Daisy woke up early too. She's been awake for almost a week now. I just feed and suppliment as normal.
I figure she knows what she's doing.

so I'm not altogether sure she DOES know what she's doing. I guess I'll just play it by ear, shoot from the hip, yadda, yadda, yadda....
