I know few people around here do use substrates made of shredded wood or pieces of wood/bark, but still....
I got my gecko on saturday, and I didn't think anything of the fact that the leos were being kept on cypress (shredded wood), because they had only been there a week or two at best, but today the little guy pooped. I'm sure they wouldn't have noticed it when the little guys pooped on the shredded wood, but I'm using paper towels right now, and as soon as I took a look at it, I could tell there was more wood in there than actual poop. He'll be fine as long as he keeps pooping it out, but if kept on that stuff in the long run, he probably would have died...so I think I'll call the place up and let them know that they really shouldn't keep the geckos on the stuff or tell others too.
I did have some of it (it came with the leopard gecko supply kit...the only part of the kit that made it imperfect in my opinion...that and it didn't come with hides)...but I used it just in the humid hide, which he only just started exploring today. I took that out and am currently using moistened paper towels in the humid hide.
Otherwise the little guy seems to be doing great. Each day, a little at a time, he's starting to come out more. Today I dumped some crickets in (5 with calcium w/d3 and vitamin powder), and I checked on the little guy about an hour later, and couldn't find a cricket in the tank, so he's eating. How much should I feed him? Should I keep going with about 5-6 a night for now? He's about 6 monthes old and 6" long.
