an odd catch in an odd location

Hi there:

A few summers ago, I was on vacation in a canoe. I was in a huge, huge body of water with lots of rotting vegetation in the water and the ocassional large boulder. I caught a few snapping turtles, lots of painted turtles, some wood frogs, and I saw a HUGE bullfrog. Anyway, I headed way, way out, until I was in open water where you couldn't see the bottom. I headed out even further, up to a huge rock jutting out of the black water.
On the rock I instantly noticed a small snake. At first I didn't know what it was, as it was very odd. I came up and caught it. It was a redbelly snake. It was a very wierd specimen. It was extremely slender, brick red, and it was very calm. When I set it back down on the rock, it plunged into the deep water and swam off into the middle of the lake. Is it normal for these guys to love the water so much? I've never even seen a water snake swimming that far out. If it helps, I later found that it had been the first one found in that area.

There is a good chance that what you found was a black swamp snake.

Hi there:

I am sure that what I found was a little red-belly. I was in northeast Vermont, and it was a slender snake, about seven inches long, with a reddish/brownish back, broken by a faint black stripe, and it had a crimson stomach. For a split second, I thought it was a Kirtland's, but then I instantly recognized it as a redbelly.
