We usually dose 50-100mg of Metronidazole per 1 kg of body weight. Doses are given once every three days for a total of three treatments. This has worked really well for us on difficult boas.
Good luck!

NEVER EVER USE FLAGYL 3 DAYS IN A ROW YOU WILL GIVE YOUR BOA BRAIN DAMAGE BELIEVE ME I MADE THAT MISTAKE USE DR KLINGENHOFFERS DOSEAGE CHART AND NOW I HAVE 3 BOAS THAT ARE BOBBLE HEADS. FLAGYL IS TO BE ADMINISTERD ONCE EVERY 10 DAYS FOR THREE DOSAGES. TAKE MY WORD FOR IT ADAM IF YOU TAKE DRIMES ADVICE YOUR NOT GOING TO BE TOO HAPPY WITH THE RESULTS AND IVE NOTICED THERE HAS BEEN A WHOLE LOT OF NOOBS DISPENSING ADVICE WHEN I DISTINCTLY REMEMBER THEM POSTING PICS OF THERE VERY FIRST BOA THAT THEY HAD JUST GOTTEN NO MORE THAN 3 MONTHS AGO AND THEY SHOULD DEFINATLY NOT BE DISPENSEING MEDICAL ADVISE ESPECIALY WITH MEDICATION LIKE FLAGYL THAT COULD CRIPPLE OR KILL SOMEONES ANIMAL!!!

I agree every 10 days dosages for reptiles and mammals are differant, I think the bottle I have says every 3 days but that is for mammals most dosages written on the bottles are, when used right flagyl can be a great thing.

I believe my post said "ONCE EVERY THREE DAYS, FOR THREE TREATMENTS." That would be give a dose, wait three days, give another dose.... No, it should not be given every day, please re-read my original post. This method of treatment has only helped, not harmed, our "hard cases". This dosing was given to me by a very qualified reptile vet and if I personally had not used it with good results I would never have posted anything!!!

I'm very sorry you harmed your animals with improper medical treatment. I have never seen or read anywhere of giving Flagyl daily. Maybe YOU misunderstood at the time, or misread. Just like you did my post.

I'm unclear if the "NOOB" remark was ment for me or not, but just in case it was, I am not a "noob", I just don't post much, mostly because of stuff like this. I was just giving, what I thought was, a straight forward answer to someones direct question.

I guess your name says it all, and I should not take any of this personally.

Have a nice day!!

FLAME_ON Dec 07, 2004 03:25 PM

No i didnt misread your post and no i didnt misread the dosage chart both are wrong!!! flagyl should never be given to a reptile that often. it should be given every 10 days not exceeding 3 doses. and as for the noob comment take it how you want. i couldve sworn i seen you post pics of your first boa that by your own words had just gotten no more that 3 months ago that and the advise ive seen you post led me to my conclusion . if that doseage worked for your animals then i must say they and you are both very lucky. and dont think for 1 sec if a vet is qualified he cant make mistakes, because the chart i have is written by dr kligenhoffer and its dead wrong . and seeing as your not a noob then im sure you know who that is? dont you? keep doseing your animals that way if you feel safe with it but when something happens remember i told you so.

drimes Dec 07, 2004 04:11 PM

I assume by klingenhoffer that you mean Dr. Roger Klingenberg and yes everyone makes mistakes...even you on occasion I'd wager. But give the guy the respect that a Dr. is due because he's spent many YEARS studing that which you profess to know so well. We did not post our first animal here a few months ago as you stated, in fact we probably got our first reptile before you were pumping air! Either way I was merely stating a protocol that has worked well for us in the past ....period! As an open forum it was my belief (or misbelief?!?) that this is a place to share information with other boa enthusiasts.

PLEASE re-read your original post where you insinuated that I was encouraging anyone to dose EVERY day with Metronidazole, because I was not. For our worst cases every 3 days has worked very well and we will continue to use this regimin as necessary.

I highly doubt that I will ever get an "I told you so" from that.

Take care!

what doses do u use for ur boas? this fella is 12 pounds ...thanks

drimes Dec 07, 2004 05:13 PM

A conservative dose for a 12 lb snake would be 250 mg. If the snake won't eat, then it needs to be tubed, and if you don't have any experience doing this then take it to a vet!!!!

Congrats for rescuing an animal. Keep us posted on how things turn out.

Just some food for thought before medicating.

If it is 12lbs, how long has it been since it has eaten? A 12 pounder can go a long time with no food without any ill effects.

It might just be in breeding mode or still adjusting to its new home.

If it is a rescue maybe they fed it somthing weird like hampsters or gerbils and thats all it likes. LOL Also if it is 12 lbs it might have been eating rabbits and likes them better than rats.

All just stuff to think about.

Everybodies been so nice lately, its making me sick.. lol. If its not John, my apologies. Just a question for the rescuee... why would you give flagyl to a boa without first having a fecal float done? Just not sure why you'd be giving it to a boa that has been captive for some time. If anything, I'd be thinking coccidia, from drinking funky water. The only time I've used flagyl is with new imports. My books recommends a dose of 25-40 mg per kg every 3 days.. two treatments. FYI.. do not overdose, do not overuse.. can cause kidney and liver failure. Also, it is recommended that this treatment be used only ONCE in a reptiles life.
Good luck-
