JUST A FEW SIMPLE QUESTIONS... (long)

GECKOPHELIAC Dec 06, 2004 07:01 PM

1. How do I post pictures in my posts? I'll try in this post, maybe I'll get it. If not please reply.
2. I know that sand isn't a good to have baby leos living on because they injest it but is it ok if I have my full grown male on it?
3. what's the best alternative substance to sand? I've heard tile and other things but im affraid they will be too thick and make him freeze or too thin and burn him. What's your opinion on this matter?
4. won't having vegetables in the tank for the crickets make it smell. are 12 crickets too many to have in the tank at 1 time? will they bite my gecko?
5. 6 months ago I added some things to my gecko's tank when i changed the sand (i also put him in a new tank(a bigger one)). now, he never uses his warm hide anymore, he lays behind it, instead. why? doesn't he recognize it? i have driftwood in his tank now and a piece of the wood hangs over the opening to his warm hide. is this the reason? is he affraid to get trapped in?

If you know the answer to any of these, please reply with the number of the question and the answer please.

THANKS ALL!

>>1. How do I post pictures in my posts?

It's easiest to put them in the gallery and then select them to put in your post from the gallery.

>>2. I know that sand isn't a good to have baby leos living on because they injest it but is it ok if I have my full grown male on it?

I DO NOT recommend it. I wouldn't want to take the risk of impaction. Instead I wouls switch to tile. It's easy to clean and put in and it looks natural. It conduct heat very well so yuor leo won't freeze. I use Vinyl tile it conducts heat very well so all you need is to put two tiles on the warm side.

>>4. won't having vegetables in the tank for the crickets make it smell. are 12 crickets too many to have in the tank at 1 time? will they bite my gecko?

I don't feed any of my herps crickets. I've found mealworms are a whole lot easier. At the bottom there is a link on how to breed them. You won't have to worry about them eating your gecko while it's asleep either. If you still want to use crix I would gutload them before you put them in the cage and feed your gecko only at night. That way they aren't sitting in the cage getting hungry all day so they decide to feed on your gex. 12 is fine to put in.

Leos are very picky in some strange circumstances. My leos get behind the warm hide also. Put him in it and maybe he'll realize it's there. If not take the wood away from the entrance maybe that's the problem.

I hope this helps you! Feel free to ask any more questions.

Actually I believe when properly gutloaded mealworms are better than crickets. I do give an occasional pinkie or wax worm though as treats especially during breeding season. To gutload meallies you can feed tehm veggies. As their name hints they eat meal. They are often found in flour so I mix flour with ground up dog food (without dye)and ground corn. I order 1000 and keep them in a bin with the meal.

Well...I guess I'll give a crack at this. ^^

1. There is a photo section on kingsnake...upload your photos there, and when you post a comment, there will be a section that allows you to choose any of the photos you uploaded and add it. ^^

2. This really is your choice. Some say it causes impactions, others say it's their natural habitat. I feel that it's too messy and use reptile carpet, with the edges melted so there's no loose strands. ^^

3.As above, I like reptile carpet...and panels and other thin substrates will not burn your pets if you use above heat lights, or gentle heat warmers like Cobra heat mats. Just be sure you put them on temp regulators incase of overheating.

4. Twelve crickets? Heh...your leo better be a healthy eater. And yes, loss crickets will chew on your poor gecko if left without food, and you want them filled with food so they give good nutrition to your leo when he eats them. If you don't want to use vegetables, just use what I use: oatmeal, dry cereal, and dog food or other dry edibles. It won't rot and give the bugs something to eat besides your gecko. Just remember, to put a stick or stone in your waterbowl so that crickets that fall in can get out...they are very poor swimmers.

5 6. Geckos are pretty curios and liking of their hidey-holes. If your's doesn't go in it, it's probably because he doesn't like it, not because he can't find it or is afraid of a collapse. ^^ You mentioned this was his hot hide...maybe it's to cool or to hot for his taste inside, so he goes on top to thermoregulate himself better.

I hope this helps with your gecky. ^^
