I finally have decided to go with the rat rack. What do you do for the screen lid? I want to be able to slid the tubs out without lifting any lids, yet still feed them from the top, ie. a small indentation in the screen which holds the food and they get what they need when they need it, not storing it in their litter.

For rats 1/2" hardware cloth is fine. I prefer 1/3" or 3/8" but that's very hard to find and needs to be ordered in bulk. Really only necessary if you want to breed mice and rats in the same rack.

An indentation is not needed. Simply use a pan that is the correct height so the rats can stand up and eat the food.

I've heard those black concrete mixing tubs are perfect.

Lots of links out there. Try Dwight Goods site as well as a search in Kingsnake's forum archives.

Here's a pic of a couple rat racks that I built. I'll take some more close up pics for you if you think they would help. I used the black mortar tubs from Home Depot...not the ones from Lowe's as they are far inferior in quality. Then I used 1/2" wire mesh/hardware cloth. Very easy to construct...takes no time.

Let me know if you need more pics. Hope this helps some.

Thanx for the update. I looked at the bins today at Lowes and the corners seemed a bit weak. How much do they cost at HD?

They cost around $4-5 each and now they have an even bigger sized tub than the ones I use...not sure the price on that one though.
