Brown Snake/Worm Snake care

wombat Dec 07, 2004 12:22 AM

Hi all-

I caught three great snakes- 2 browns and a worm snake raking my yard yesterday- here in NC these guys are very commonly found this time of year. So those folks who are looking for worm sankes should come visit and help rake up the yard!

Check out the attached pic(sorry for the fuzzy pic)!

This brown is very colorful, flattened and threatened, very feisty, the other is all gray, only a slight stripe, very faint dots on the back, and much fatter (almost no neck), and a completely peaceful calm dispostion, both are about 8-9 inches. The worm snake is typical in color, a little larger, 10 inches or so.

Questions:

I've read back through the forum a little, but have a few questions...

Can multiple Browns be kept in the same tank? and how about the worm snake, can they all be housed together, how much area per snake?

For feeding, I see that earthworms, slugs, and waxworms are favorites, should be no problem there, as far as slugs go are regular nasty garden slugs okay? How large should the slugs be in relation to the snake size?

Do these guys accept handling well? are they prone to any illnesses or problems?

Thanks a lot- I'm excited about keeping these snakes- and my six year old thinks they are SO cute! Quite a contrast to our corn snakes, etc...

**Brown snakes are quite social, so it really wouldn't matter if you kept a brown snake with a brown snake. I'd keep the worm snake seperate, but if really doesn't matter as the brown snakes will not come into contact with it, they spend most of their time underground. A 10 gallon tank would be sufficent for the 3 snakes.

** Yes those slugs will do just fine, any slug that a brown snake will attack, I'd say only slugs a little bit bigger than a brown snake's head.

Yes and Yes
I can't begin to state the illnesses or problems
