itsazoo Dec 07, 2004 01:23 PM

Does anyone know if it is safe to use a UTH with an acrylic tank?

No you can't. I says in the UTH's instructions (trust me I wanted to do the same thing). It gets too warm and could possibly melt the plastic or burnn your Leo. Sorry You'll have to stick with a heat lamp.

thanks! I threw away the instructions awhile ago and haven't had a chance to go check one out at the store.

I have a plastic tank and I have a UTH. I have a 5 gallon size..I don't remember what brand. If I can find it and you want it I'll post. I just have the tank propped up about an inch so it gets plenty of air. Hasn't started melting yet and it's been about 3 months.

I'm trying to figure out how to heat a 44 gallon coffee table aquarium for my leos. It's an elongated hexagon with an acrylic base and a glass top. It does have a riser (for lack of a better word) that keeps the tank about 3 inched off the floor so there is plenty of ventilation. I've also been considering using a radient heat panel ( www.pro-products.com/proheat.html ) but they seem a little complicated. Any more suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

A UTH will work fine on a plastic surface. You just need to make sure it's plugged into a reliable thermostat or dimmer. Keep a digital thermometer to monitor the temps too. And then as a further precaution, go with a UTH brand that's designed not to overheat. From my experience, T-Rex Cobra and Four Paws pads don't get nearly as hot as Zoomed's heatpads.
