FBT neurological problem?

FiveFBTs Dec 07, 2004 01:27 PM

About a month ago I noticed my oldest FBT started listing to the right.... in the water, he would kind of shake his head to the right. On land, he leaned to the right and shook his head (slowly, not fast).

Today when he tried to get out of his pond, he started swimming in a circle. On land, he walked in a circle.

His energy has been a little low and he seems rather uncoordinated.... he seems a little more comfortable in the waterm where it supports him.

I did not quarantine him because these symptoms came on so slowly and at first he just seemed to be sluggish. The other fbts in his tank are just fine, energetic and eating well.

Any one else seen this in their fbts?

I can relate. I have a fbt that I recieved in this condition about a year ago. He spends most of his time in the water and has some difficulty catching crickets some of the time I am hand feeding him on the days where he is having extra difficultly. I have two other fbt in with him and have had them with him for a year and they are healthy. He swims in circles and moves his head slowly from side to side like you've described. Just make sure he is eating enough and he should be fine.

Thanks so much - that sounds just like what he's doing.

I've never hand-fed before, can you give me some tips? Should I use tweezers to hold a live cricket in front of him?

Please let me know how your guy continues to do.

Thanks,
Kim

I just hold the cricket out in front of him and he'll lunge and miss quite a few times but it's all about patience. If he catches your finger it does not hurt. Any questions don't hesitate to ask.

We just adopted 2 firebellies from Petco....the manager (who knows us) simply gave them to us because they are not sellable. Both act as you all have described. Head tilted at all times, they hop in circles and their aim is off going for food as well. I was hoping to find out some info on this but no one seems to know. I am assuming it is neurological in nature? The larger one takes food from my hands just fine, I am still coaxing the smaller one.
They also gave us a White's Tree frog that is in pitiful shape....rather skinny and he has a damaged eye thats healed but will always look not quite right. Any suggestions on helping the White's recover and begin eating? According to them, he checked out fine with the vet, overall.
We already have a White's and just bought a baby albino PacMan, but I am no frog expert.
Thanks for any help you can give me..... My email is: sshalimar16@comcast.net
Thanks so much,
Laura Ledet
