junior meets mazuri! (questions inside)

unchikun Dec 07, 2004 01:28 PM

i finally bought some mazuri (at the local petsmart), and junior (my yearling redfoot) absolutely LOVES the stuff. i've found that mushing it in with veggies that he doesn't particularly care for is a way i can "trick" him into eating them.

i think, though, that the feeding directions on the back of the canister must be more oriented toward more grassy-diet-oriented torts?

ed, and anyone else who feeds it to redfoots, how often do you feed it to yours, and about how much, in comparison to greens and fruits/veggies? also, the canister says that no additional supplementation is needed, but i'm hesitant to lay off of the rep-cal and herptivite. opinions?

You can get away with feeding just the Mazuri diet but I don't think it is a good idea.

I feed it once or twice a week and I feed as much as the tortoises will eat in one sitting.

As far as grasses and redfoots... I don't know about the Colombian RFs (which yours looks like) but the Cherry Head RFs a pretty good grazers. I feed them lawn clippings when it is available and a good # of mine chow down on the stuff.

i've not tried feeding mine any grass... i'll have to try offering some lawn clippings and see how he likes it. knowing him, he'll love it, then snub it next time he sees it, and then decide he likes it again. i just had the impression that some torts (like the gopher and sulcata mentioned on the mazuri can) were supposed to have more grasses in their diet than some of the more tropical, fruit-oriented ones. i s'pose the extra fiber can't hurt...

Our Redfoot's get a 60-65% fruit, 35-40% greens diet with Mazuri once every two to three weeks. . . and Fancy Feast Roasted Chicken Feast every other month.

Oddly enough the Mazuri has a higher protein content. Go figure.

Mazuri has higher protein content than what?

Also, you might want to rethink the high fruit proportion.
