Arboreal Vs. Long Tank 4 Timorensis ?

Soylent Dec 07, 2004 03:33 PM

Any opinions on the topic ? Im new to monitors, and from what I can find on the species they prefer trees to groundspace....any thoughts, or experience ? I was thinking, perhaps because of its size and tree loving nature, a large reptarium set up for arboreal reptiles like the indoor outdoor ones for large chameleons might work nicely. though Im a bit concerned it may not be tough enough ?...what do you think ?

My timors also liked the available height given in their enclosure, but they would also take advantage of burrowing from time to time. A reptarium would be NO good. they don't hold moisture at all! I don't get it, Chameleons need more humidiy then monitors yet they can be housed in them fine. Anyways my thoughts.

I have my pair in an arboreal set up using the 260 model Reptarium. The only time I see them leave their trees are to eat or when I somehow disturb them and they run like hell all over the place...(flighty little guys!)
Im no expert so you might want some other opinions but mine seem perfectly healthy and happy.
As far as being tough...I've put a large blackthroat in a 100 model reptarium while I was cleaning up his enclosure and it withstood all his scratching with no visible damage.

My first monitor was a Timor that I kept in a 65 gallon aquarium. I was never happy with the monitor because all he did was hide. Occasionally he would climb on the limbs to the basking spot, but would take off to his hide whenever he saw me.

I had another timor that I kept in a 4x2x4 enclosure and the monitor watched me. This one seemed alot more tolorant of me. He was cool as heck.

I think what made the second one more enjoyable was the fact that he felt more secure and content since he had plenty of area to climb and be acive. I am thinking of getting a trio and keeping in the second cage I described.

I would not recomend an aquarium for them. I also would not recomend a reptarium either. Get 2 pieces of plywood and some screws. You can cut them or have the store cut the wood, then screw the pieces together. Buy a sheet of plexiglass and put hinges on it and the front of the cage. Put in a water dish, a bunch of limbs, and some dirt on the botom (protect the bottom from the dirt.) This will be a lot cheaper than an aquarium or reptarium and will give the animals a lot more room. Keep in mind this is a very basic cage
