how long can a res live out of water?

jacblades Dec 07, 2004 04:47 PM

on friday, i raised the water level a little too high in my res s tank. he escaped and i have not been able to find him.
should i have any hopes that he still may be alive?
he is about 4 inches.

one of my RES was kept out of water for a year so your little guy should be just fine. I would worry about his/her shell as far as how high the drop was and whatnot.

Look in dark corners and under things. Without the safety of water, RES love to hide in the dark.

Good luck.

its good to know he is probably still ok but i have been searching every day and i cant find him anywhere!
he fell from about 5 feet but it was onto shag carpet so i think he will be ok.
i am just worried about him not having anyhting to eat/drink.

thanks for the encouragement.

Contrary to what most people believe. They can eat out of water. The people I got her from did it for over a year and she was the fattest RES I have ever seen!

"She had a water bowl.... and a food bowl. This proves the myth that they CAN eat out of water. This one did and was so fat that she had shell deformities because her shell could not keep up with the rate that she was growing."

....Probobly not the kind of pet keeping I would go around bragging about and suggesting to others, unless I was chasing the dragon or trying to get the monkey off my back.

Well if you would have taken the time to read any of my previous posts or even my profile.... you would know that I am a reptile rahabber and that this RES came to me in the condition I stated. I did not keep her that way, nor would I suggest someone doing so. I was merely stating that it WAS possible.... maybe to give a distraught owner some solace?

Please next time read more before assuming someone would purposly do this to an animal and then brag about it.

How did your turtle eat if it was kept out of water for an entire year. Also -- you must have had a water source of some sort for it.

I am so happy for you!! Did you check the shell and make sure there was no damage or cracks? Where did you find him?
