Licorice Stick Musking?

crtoon83 Dec 07, 2004 06:48 PM

My female licorice stick black rat snake...close to 2 yrs old, has recently been getting out of her hiding cave more and more. I used to always pick her up from there, and she was fine, but now since shes always out i'll pick her up and she'll musk the **** out of me. Of course it stinks so I end up putting her back in her cage. Any ideas?

Hold your nose and keep her out! You're conditioning the snake (or she's conditioning you since you may be easier to train ) that when ever she makes a stink, you'll put her back. Most snakes, and I'm not trying to upset anyone here, really don't seem to appreciate handling. Some "tolerate" it better than others... Since she used to be less of a musky gal, maybe you've changed the way you handle her? Are you handling her less since now you've got a few more snakes? Are you handling her for shorter intervals so she's not getting over the "Hey I just woke up, now put me back" thing? Does she seem to musk you more often after you've handled your other snakes? Maybe she's jealous? Just some thoughts for you to ponder...

I thought right after i hit the post message button that it was conditioning her... lol. When I got my other snakes, she was the eaiset of them all to handle - so she got the least amount of attention. I was focusing mainly on my blue beauty and texas bairdis... the blue beauty was very agressive, the texas bairdis were just typical hatchlings. I still handled her, however I went from daily down to weekly just about. I never figured that once the tolerance was there for being handled, it could go away. Guess I was wrong!
