Sad news about my new baby...

RaderRVT Dec 07, 2004 08:50 PM

I received her at noon and she was dead in her box! I am so disappointed and sad. She was limp and bloated and had fluid under the skin on her belly. Do you think the heat pack cooked her? She was warm to the touch and her tupperware container was sitting right on top of the heat pack with a folded paper towel on the bottom of the tupperware under her body. Any one have any ideas what happened? I feel awful.

im so sorry, i know how excited i was when i got that box in my hands, if i would of opened it to a dead animal that would have crushed me...

As awful as it all is, and so very sad, it most certainly could be the heat pack, my opinion from everything I have learned about them.

Either hot or cold packs, its IMPORTANT NOT to let them lay in direct contact with the container housing the lizard.

THey are to change the air temp in the box, and not there to heat the reptile itself DIRECTLY!

Again, this is my OPINION from what I know to be the way its done. SO VERY SAD for the baby !

Sorry for your great dissapointment and sad feelings finding the baby in that condition ,

Take care,

No Eve that is not just an opinion that is a fact..... The heatpacks can reach temps in excess of like 130 I believe.... That would cook anything.... Imagine if you were put on one that was size proprotionate ....... We'd be dead fairly quick as well..... An opinion would be trhat any person that would put the ;lizard that close to a heat pack that on the package tells what the temp is has to be some what mentally retarded........ or maybe that's a fact too......LOL...

Sounds like the heat pad could have been a large factor in her death. When I put heat pads in the box, I put them on the opposite side of the deli cup or canvas sack, that way they do not get overheated. Have you contacted the breeder? I would do that ASAP, and make sure that the gaurantee is followed to refund your money/get you a new dragon. If there is no gaurantee, I'm not sure what you can do except contact the breeder and hope for some sympathy. Let us know how it goes, it must be a bummer, and I'm sorry!

I was going to suggest contacting the breeder also to get a new live on ASAP.

Sorry to hear about that and I hope your next beardie won't end up the same way (unless you get a refund). If you want, you could tell him to put the heat pack to the side instead of right under the tupperware.

Good luck~

Agree about telling the breeder to put it on the side if you do decide to get a new one from there. It is like the greenhouse effect in a way, the heat is transferred from the heat pack, heating the deli cup and the air inside, but then the air has minimal space to go out of because of limited holes, and it gets hotter and hotter, with no where where the baby can escape to.

Good luck!

And there was a "live arrival" guarantee. The bad thing is she hasn't gotten back to me. It has been 8 and 1/2 hours. She told me to contact her to let her know she got there safely (obviously not!) and she has updated her website since I emailed her but she has not emailed me. I am getting a little frustrated.

First, sorry for your loss, it is always sad when we losed a pet friend.

Have you tried calling her yet? If you call her then maybe she'll answer and have to talk to you then.

I hope things work out for you.

Palm Beach Dragons was very responsible and she was very upset about what happened. Understandably, she doesn't want to ship to the west coast again. I just feel so bad about the dragon.

Stacey,

I am so sorry this happened, its everyones worst fear when waiting for one to arrive.

The heat packs do say not to be in direct contact and should be off to the side, or on top... not where they touch the animal.

We ship ours with a layer of egg carton on the bottom with the heat pack in it and wrapped in paper towel or newpaper and displaced to the side. If going to an area real cold, another one goes on the top of the inside lid, sitll well away from the animal.

The coloration you saw on the tummy, indicated she probably passed away the night before, probably shortly after placed in the box.

Again, I am so sorry you must be heartbroken

I hope it wasn't a "bad" death. You know what I mean? It makes me sick to think about it. She was such a pretty little thing.

I am SO SO Sorry!! How horrible! Mine were shipped in September, so it was still warm enough not to need heat packs. She did ship the two dragons in one tupperware container which I thought was a tad off - just because one was 6 weeks younger, I didn't think it was so safe to have them in close proximity for the long trip - but they got here safe and sound. If you want to email me please feel free. I really really hope you've heard back from Deby by now - Please keep us updated.

Take Care,
Melissa

I received a baby, shipped, not too long ago and can't imagine going through this after the anticipation of a new one. You are in my thoughts. I hope this all works out for you.

Sincerely,
Marilee

I'd have to agree, the dragon was not shipped correctly, poor thing. It couldn't get away from the heat. Is this a fairly new breeder?

The breeder handled this awful situation very well. I don't know if she is a new breeder, but I don't think she ships very much. She was very upset and did an automatic refund.

That's horrible. I can't imagine opening up a box, expecting to see a bright eyed, beautiful little dragon looking up at me and then see what you saw! My heart goes out to you sweetie. I am so sorry you had to go through that. That's one of my worst fears when people ship me dragons. I'm glad that the breeder is taking full responsibility and has refunded your money. I know that won't make the horrible feelings go away any easier. Please know that it was not your fault. I wish you well and I hope you have a good Christmas.

Hugs,
~Veronica
