ATB housing

RobertIII Dec 07, 2004 10:04 PM

hi, i am new to the forum and new to snakes, but do have experiance with various turtles, frogs, and lizards. anyways i have been thinking of getting a atb and have a few questions. i have read up on them as much as possible but would like some advice. my question is on the housing i have read that you should have a inch of water on the bottom with live plants such as pothos growing? is this correct or did i not understand what i read correctly. also do atb's lay eggs or have live young? also can you all post pics of your setups for your atb's so i can get a ideal of what i need to do? thnx for all replies

Hi Robert,
Amazon's like all Boa's give "Live Birth" ! As far as Encloser's some keeper's do use water in the botton of the Encloser for substrate, mostly the keeper's with Acrilic Cageing, they dont mist because of water spot's. The main thing with Amazon's, is a Cage that is easy to keep hi level's of Humidity, and good air flow all at the same time ! I keep my Cageing Simple, I use all Rubber-Maid's, I keep alot of Snake's and they work the "Best" for me ! Alway's "Perfect Shed's" and they stack good ! I mist my Amazon's Daily to provide Humidity, I use paper towel's and new's papper for substrate. Here's a web-site with some pic.'s and how to info. on "Great Encloser's" ! ! www.thecarnivorousorchid.com Here's a pic. of my A.T.B. Encloser's I use ! Take Care ! !

thanks for replying i was wondering if anyone was ever going too?? lol!! i was thinking of the rubbermaid because my ultimate goal is to start a breeding colony. so if i wanted to would it be ok to keep about a inch of water on the bottom of the rubbermaid or would it be better to just mist? also i have heard of people taking 10 gallon tanks and standing them up and converting them into a atb housing? any feed back on that ideal? thank you for all your help, hopefully if i have any more questions i can count on getting some help from you all. its nice to have people who have actual experiance then to just read it in a book you know? thnks again
-Robert

You can use a 10 Gallon on end but when you mist you'll get water spot's Bad, also on end a 10 Gallon aint got much for floor space ! Also they are real bad at holding Humidity, you can use water as a substrate, but with Amazon's I think you'll be changeing your water alot, I use new's papper, and I feed my Amazon's every 5 Day's on the young one's, every 7 Day's on the Adult's and they crap alot ! ! I think water would be one "Big Mess" ! ! Here's some more Cage's to look at on page 2 Nov. 4 th. check out New Cage from Predator 20, also on page 2 Oct. 22 New Acrylic Cage from coolh17, you'll see more Cage Idea's if you look through the Forum. Did you check out the web-site I give ya ? Well Good Luck ! ! Anymore Question's just ask ! ! Take Care ! Here's an 04' C.B.B. Garden Phase !

yeah that was a cool site, i like the cage with the 2 rubbermaids stacked togeather. i think i will go with a rubbermaid container, sounds alot more easier to maintain! what do you use to heat the container? would a heat blanket be suffeiciant enough to create moisture? i have read thats all some people use? i live in az, so the temp in certian rooms stay about a constaint 75-80 if not higher during the summer. i have another question. will a halloween phase atb keeps it color, or will it look like a garden phase as an adult? thnx for all your help

Is Awesome ! ! Real informative, did you see the rack with the small Rubber-Maid's ? Now that's High Humidity ! Here's a web-site with some info. on small encloser's with water and plant's, www.thedarkgrove.com and you can get all kind's of info. on care at www.corallus.com click on Amazon's you got care sheet's History all kind's of info. there, also check out the Photo Gallery there it's Awesome Ton's of Great pic.'s ! On temp's I use Whole Room Heat ! Temp's for my Amazon's Daytime range from 80 degree's to 88 degree's on the High side, my morning temp's are 80 degree's afternoon temp's 84 degree's late afternoon temp's 88 degree's, nighttime temp's 78 degree's & 80 degree's these temp's work "Great" for me ! In 8 year's I've never had an R.I. or a Regurge ! As far as Holloween Phase Amazon's, this question has been posted before with no answer's I would guess they fade with age ! I have one that had the color as a Baby but faded as a yearling, here's a pic. of it ! Take Care ! And Good Luck !

yes i have been too both those websites, very cool and very interesting. the cages on the one website you told me to go to were awsome!! i think i am going to design mine after the single story one with pvc, just seemed like a good setup. so do you think having a undertank heater and the normal temp in the room the snake would be in is abouy 70 at night adn 80 or so during the day would be enough? i am thinking of ordering a halloween phase or a garden phase from siegal? any suggestions on that? also how big of a rubbermaid container should i get for a juvenile? would a 15 quart be a good size? or should i just get a normal size one? thnx again for all your response's!

In the pic. above of the Sterilite's, the one with the red top's are 54 qt. that's like a tall blanket box, the one on top of the red one, with the blue lid that's a sweater box 16 qt. the small one's are perfect for Neonate Amazon's, but they grow fast and they'll need the 54 qt. real soon ! Under Tank Heat aint the best for Amazon's, bacause there not alway's on the floor, although they do spend alot of time on the floor. I think for Arboreal Snake's your better off with some sort of outside heat source like a ceramic heat emitter close to the Cage makeing the inside temp's 80 degree's, I would'nt let my air temp's get below 78 degree's in the encloser. Ben Siegel has "Great" Animal's you cant go wrong with him ! Good Luck !

I house my yearling ATB in a 20 gallon tank. I use lights to heat it with and covered the top with a piece of plexiglass with a hole cut in it for the light..
I Mist mine daily, the water spots arent a big deal they are easier to see through than a rubbermaid...and a quick wipe with a paper towel cleans them right up.
I use potting soil branches and a ficus tree in mine and she loves it.
I would suggest a more realistic setup but either one works..i will try and get a pic of mine for you

robertiii Dec 11, 2004 10:48 PM

jasonmattes Dec 13, 2004 12:12 AM
