Question about breeding related snakes.

bloodpython171 Dec 07, 2004 10:18 PM

Simple question really do you consider this a do, or do not. I have heard breeders on both sides of this debate. What is your opinion? Has anyone done this and had a bad experience, or no problems at all? Please leave your input.
thanks,
Matt

Genetically, there is no difference between inbreeidng humans and any other animal. Everything living has genes in it, some are good and some aren't. Usually the bad genes are recessive... meaning it has to match up with another recessive gene to become visible on the body. Now, not all recessive genes are "bad" genes... just to make that clear. For example red hair and blue eyes in humans are both recessive.

The first time around you may not have bad results, but if you keep breeding the same strain, you will sooner or later get some "bad" traits showing through. Bug eyes are one common trait in leucistic rat snakes, I really don't know what other "bad" genes there are that are visual in snakes.... most are just internal; they may not develop properly or something of the like. Personally, I wouldn't do it. But that's just me.

I was wondering the same thing just recently myself, would be good to get a few more responses from people who have done it?

To those of you that believe corn snakes just look like big worms, at least admit they're the most beautiful worms you've ever seen...
